Multilingual Learners

A "multilingual learner" refers to any child who is learning and developing two or more languages as they navigate their home, community, and early care and education (ECE) environments. A child's language development is shaped by their experiences, surroundings, exposure to different languages, and opportunities to use them. While all children benefit from support, guidance, and positive interactions with adults, multilingual learners require additional attention to address their unique linguistic needs as they develop both their home language(s) and additional languages. Providing support for multilingual children's language development is essential for their future success in K-12 education. These services are often referred to as English as a Second Language (ESL) or Multilingual Learner (MLL) services.
