Prerequisite: Music Appreciation Part I

The Apex course description states, “Music appreciation introduces students to the history, theory, and genres of music...The second semester presents the rich modern traditions, including American jazz, gospel, folk, soul, blue, Latin rhythms, rock and roll, and hip hop.”

*Art Appreciation (Course #R6002)

The Apex course description states, "Art Appreciation is a survey of the history of Western visual arts, with a primary focus on painting."  

*Art Appreciation (Schoology)

This online Art Appreciation course hosted in Schoology is designed for high school students to explore the rich world of art and develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of various artistic expressions. Throughout the course, students will investigate key concepts in art, including history, techniques, and cultural contexts, while cultivating their own critical thinking and observational skills.

Social Studies Elective Sociology (Course #R4365)

The Apex course description states, "Sociology examines why people think and behave as they do in relationships, groups, institutions, and societies."

Multicultural Studies (Course #R6006)

The Apex course description states, "The course emphasizes the perspectives of minority groups while allowing students from all backgrounds to better understand and appreciate how race, culture and ethnicity, and identity contribute to their experiences."

Geography and World Cultures (Course #R6009)

The Apex course description states, "Geography and World Cultures offers a tightly focused and scaffolded curriculum that enables students to explore how geographic features, human relationships, political and social structures, economics, science and technology, and the arts have developed and influenced life in countries around the world. Along the way, students are given rigorous instruction on how to read maps, charts, and graphs, and how to create them.”

Science Elective Environmental Science Part I (Course #R6015)

The Apex course description states, “Environmental Science explores the biological, physical, and sociological principles related to the environment in which organisms live on Earth, the biosphere.  Part I includes the following units: Introduction, Earth’s Physical Systems, The Biosphere, and Ecology.

The Apex course description states, “Environmental Science explores the biological, physical, and sociological principles related to the environment in which organisms live on Earth, the biosphere. Anatomy  (Course #R6110)

Prerequisite: Biology

The Apex course description states, “In this course, students will explore the anatomy or structure of the human body. In addition to learning anatomical terminology, students will study the main systems of the body-- including skeletal, muscular, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, reproductive, and nervous systems. In addition to identifying the bones, muscles, and organs, students will study the structure of cells and tissues within the body.”

Physiology  (Course #R6113)

Prerequisite: Anatomy

The Apex course description states, “In this course, students will examine the functions of the body’s biological systems--including skeletal, muscular, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, endocrine, nervous, and reproductive systems. In addition to understanding the function of each system, students will learn the function of cells, blood, and sensory organs, as well as study DNA, immunity, and metabolic systems.”

Computer Applications (Course #R6010)

The Apex course description states, "Computer Applications provides an introduction to software applications that prepares students to succeed in the workplace and beyond. Students will develop an understanding of professional communications and leadership skills while gaining proficiency with word processing, email, and presentation management software. "

Business Applications (Course #R6017)

The Apex course description states, "Business Applications prepares students to succeed in the workplace. Students begin by establishing an awareness of the roles essential to an organization's success, and then work to develop an understanding of professional communications and leadership skills. In doing so, students gain proficiency with word processing, email, and presentation management software.”

Principles of Business, Marketing & Finance Part I (Course #R6008)

The Apex course description states, "Principles of Business, Marketing, and Finance provides the knowledge and skills students need for careers in business and marketing. Students begin exploring roles and functions that business and marketing play in a global society, develop an understanding of the marketplace, as well as understanding product placement and promotion."

Principles of Business, Marketing & Finance Part II (Course #R6013)

Prerequisite Part I

The second semester of Principles of Business, Marketing & Finance includes the following units: The Role of Economics and Finance in Marketing; Starting a Business; Managing a Business; Government, Ethics and Law in Business, and Your Future in Business, Marketing and Finance.

Mathematics of Personal Finance Part I (Course #R5555)

Prerequisites Geometry and 12th Grade

The Apex course description states, "Mathematics of Personal Finance focuses on real-world financial literacy, personal finance, and business subjects. Students apply what they learned in Algebra I and Geometry to topics including personal income, taxes, checking and savings accounts, credit, loans and payments.”

Mathematics of Personal Finance Part II (Course #R5556)

Prerequisites Geometry, 12th Grade and Math of Personal Finance Part I

The Apex course description states, "Mathematics of Personal Finance focuses on real-world financial literacy, personal finance, and business subjects. Students apply what they learned in Algebra I and Geometry to topics including car ownership, home ownership, insurance and retirement, investments, and business.”

Media Literacy (Course #R6011)

The Apex course description states, "Media Literacy teaches students how to build the critical thinking, writing, and reading skills required in a media-rich and increasingly techno-centric world. In a world saturated with media messages, digital environments, and social networking, concepts of literacy must expand to include all forms of media."

Creative Writing (Course #R1415)

11th and 12th Grades only

The Apex course description states, “Creative Writing is an English elective course that focuses on the exploration of short fiction and poetry, culminating in a written portfolio that includes one revised short story and three to five polished poems. Students draft, revise, and polish fiction and poetry through writing exercises, developing familiarity with literary terms and facility with the writing process as they study elements of creative writing.”

Writing Skills & Strategies (Course #R6014)

The Apex course description states, “Writing Skills and Strategies develops key language arts skills necessary for high school graduation and success on high stakes exams through a semester of interactive instruction and guided practice in composition fundamentals.”

Modern Language Spanish 1A (Course #R5311)

The Apex course description states, “Spanish I covers the five Cs of the ACTFL standard: communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities. The instruction is balanced between the thematic and communicative approaches to learning language. Spanish I students learn to greet people, describe family and friends, talk about hobbies, and communicate about other topics, such as ecology, travel, and medicine.”

Intro to Coaching  (Course #R6111)

11th & 12th Grades Only 

The Apex course description states, “This course focuses on the various responsibilities of a coach and the skills needed to successfully fill this important position. Throughout the course, students will explore various coaching models and leadership styles, sports nutrition and sports psychology, as well as safety in conditioning and cross-training. Students will learn effective communication, problem-solving, and decision making skills. The course will also introduce students to game strategy, tactical strategy, skills-based training, and coaching ethics.”

Personal Training Concepts  (Course #R6112)

Prerequisite: Physical Education or Physical Education 9

The Apex course description states, “This course examines basic concepts in fitness that are important for personal fitness, as well as necessary foundational information for any health or exercise career field. Areas of study include musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology, terms of movement, basic biomechanics, health related components of fitness, FITT principles, functional fitness skills, safety and injury prevention, posture and technique, nutrition and weight management.”

*Child Development (Course #R6113)

The Apex course description states, “This course provides a thorough examination of child development from conception, infancy, and toddlerhood through preschool and school age children.  Physical, cognitive, emotional and social development will be studied throughout each of the stages.  The role of a positive and involved caregiver in the life of a growing child is emphasized throughout the course, as well as guides for safety and best practices.  Additional topics include parenting and guiding behavior, family planning, healthy pregnancy, genetic disorders, and children with special needs.  Career options that involve working with children are also explored in this course.”

*Life Skills (Course #R6108)

The Apex course description states, “This course allows students to explore their personality type and interests, as well as refine important skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.  This includes personal nutrition and fitness skills, time and stress management, communication and healthy relationships, goal setting, study skills, leadership and service, environment and consumer health, and personal finances.  In addition, students explore possible colleges and careers that match their needs, interests, and talents.”
